Ring Around the Rosey

Wearing a vintage 1950s rose dress from Trade Me, vintage silver bangle a birthday present from my mum, very old velvetty flatforms and blue belt from a market in Vietnam.

I was trying out a middle part today, but after looking at these photos I have realised that is the WORST IDEA EVER and I have promptly returned my hair to its usual state. So sorry. But yeah, I got this beautiful NZ-made cotton sundress on Trade Me recently and have worn it like five days in a row. In the picture it looked black and white, which I was a little nervous about as I don't often wear those colours, but it turns out it's got a beautiful pale pinky lilac wash to it. The label makes me titter a bit too - 'Another Beejay Garment', ha. I suspect today is one of the last sunny days we'll have in Wellington for a while, so I was trying to make the most of wearing cotton without a layer of wool.

I've had these black velvetty flatforms since high school and recently got the straps fixed for a tenner and now they have many more years of life left in them, I hope. They are so comfy and practical for work. Also I am wearing lipstick - Revlon Colorstay Muse. Mum was up for the weekend last week and we both decided to become lipstick people. I always forget I have it on and then smear it on my face. Fun.

  2. You always find the most beautiful 1950s dresses! I love lipstick and go through phases of wearing it - but often it ends up everywhere (like smudged on an important document at work - eek!)

    1. Thanks! My 50s dress collection is a bit out of control really. I carry a canvas tote to work and I have noticed a few suspicious pink smudges on that recently!

  3. haha i never used to be a lipstick person (just gloss and balm) until a few years ago because i hated having to maintain it when i was out and worry about it wearing off and looking ridiculous. but it is actually super fun to play around with! also your dress is lovely and i wish there was something awesome like trademe for australia where i could get vintage dresses all the time!

    1. I definitely want to get more colours but I really have no idea what suits me - back to the Revlon counter for me, I reckon. Yeah, Trademe is pretty great sometimes. There are a lot of people on there who have no idea about the value of vintage, which means you can snap up an insane bargain, but also that there are people who put $300 start prices on average cotton 50s dresses!

    1. Thanks! Hopefully the muted colours mean I can wear it with lots of different coats in Winter.

  5. Actually the part looks ok I recon. Yeh I'm not a lipstick person at all. I want to be one when I grow up. (!)
    Beautiful dress. Love it.
Those blue shoes are MINX label by the way. So shiny! Vanessa (squirrel) has the exact same pair on in a recent post!
    Happy days x

    1. Thank you! I thought they looked a bit like Vanessa's ones! They are adorable but I can't see the same pair on Trademe right now, will have to keep an eye out. Also I emailed you at the address listed on your profile, hope you got it! xo

  6. It's such a pretty dress and it looks great on you even if they aren't your usual colours. I love lipstick but I do hate that it gets all over cups and glasses and things.

  8. HI Georgia
I'm working on an article for Vintage LIfe magazine about California Cottons, is it okay if I mention your blog? I'd like the readers to know about the connection of California Cottons to New Zealand. Let me know :)

    1. Hey Holly, of course that's fine! Let me know if you'd like any more information about or photos of the labels or the dresses themselves. I am actually altering the heart-print one right now so I can wear it to the zoo on my birthday on Monday!

  10. I love the color palette of that dress--gray tones softened by pinks and lilacs; it's really soothing and beautiful. And maybe one of these days I'll finally start wearing makeup! I'm sure it'd make me look snazzier in my blog photos (and I bet most vintage-wearing girls wouldn't dream of leaving the house without some makeup on!), but like you, I always end up smearing it. Plus, I usually feel cakey and yucky by the end of the day.
